Meeting

You are invited to join Wilfrid Laurier’s Biology Department in their first Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Lecture Series on Friday, March 24 at 2:30 PM.

This year’s speaker is Dr. Allyson MacLean, Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa discussing Making science more equitable: promoting accessibility in our teaching labs.

Abstract: Many equity-deserving groups are significantly under-represented in STEM and there is evidence that cultivating a sense of inclusion in scientific classrooms and research labs is an important factor in stimulating engagement and retention of such under-represented groups. Nevertheless, scientific and teaching laboratories represent unique learning environments that may present unusual challenges to our students. Drawing from interviews with undergraduate students at the University of Ottawa and informed by guidance from our Centre for Students with Disabilities (CSD), this seminar will outline and explore ways in which we can make our classrooms and teaching labs more inclusive and accessible to students with diverse cognitive and physical abilities.
